Experiment with aesthetic and touchdesigner

WARNING! FLASHING COLORS!

I made this song as a side project during Spring semester when I felt stuck with the assignments from intro to electronic music. I was sort of obsessed with the Gen X Soft Club aesthetic, as well as other 90s style poster aesthetics and I tried to channel those into making this demo.

Aphex Subway Beach Train

I made the instrumental but felt like it needed a vocal to tie it all together, and somehow this Joy Division one seemed to work really well! I put it through a vocoder too to make the melody fit the rest of the instrumental, but rhythmically it worked super well.
I've also been watching a lot of touchdesigner tutorials and wanted to apply what I had learned so far to a small video project. The network is highly inefficient, but it seems to have worked. Here is a screenshot of the network, the lyric section is within a container and its a real mess.

Network for the video

I generated a sphere, then use the audio cues to create noise in the shape and to distort the color. I also used a bunch of LFOs to generate a bunch of evolving noise in a background image that I had created with a lot of smudges in GIMP a while back. Probably the most inefficient part of the network was when I used a bunch of DATs with every single lyrics in the song and used a button to switch between them. In the future I'd want to find a way to automate that, and also to find a way for the lyrics to fade out before switching to the next one. I'm pretty happy with the project overall, I definitely reinforced my skills by actually applying what I'd learned and putting them to use in my own context. Touchdesigner is a really fun software to use, I've loved trying to solve problems and combine different operators to get a result that I want. The Youtube upload is also only limited to 720p :/ I might need to find a better place to upload videos to embed here.

Fractals

I made this song and video as a final project for my Electronic Music Seminar during my final semester at Lewis and Clark College. It was really fun to make, i started by making the song as that was the main assignment, then made the video after. Its almost 2 different projects but I think they work quite well together.

Cloudwalker - A Tenebris Ad Lucem

An ambient album I made in 2021. It was the first real big project I tried to do. It's a little cringe in hindsight, like wow I wanted to be so intellectual and pick a Latin name for my album. However, its definitely not bad and I learned a lot from making it.
